Seal the door first. It is the cheapest step, takes an afternoon, and on most rooms it is the single most noticeable improvement available. Then add mass with MLV on the wall you share with the noise. Skip full-room construction until you have done both, because the door alone often gets you most of the way to a usable room.
You never notice how noisy the world is until you point a condenser microphone at it. Traffic, plumbing, a computer fan, someone walking upstairs. All of it lands on the take. The instinct is to plan a full studio build, but the fastest and cheapest route to a recordable room is much narrower than that, and worth doing before you spend on construction.

Beginners ask about soundproofing when they often mean acoustic treatment. They are different jobs with different products, and buying the wrong one is the most common way to waste a budget.
- Soundproofing stops noise crossing the boundary in either direction. It works by adding mass and closing gaps.
- Acoustic treatment makes the room sound better on a recording by absorbing echo and reverberation inside it. It does not block anything.
If your problem is traffic on the take, that is soundproofing. If your problem is a hollow, boxy vocal sound, that is treatment. Most rooms eventually need both, but only one of them is urgent on day one.

03 /Start with the door
A hollow-core door with an undercut for airflow is, acoustically, a permanent open window. Sealing it costs a fraction of any other step on this page and takes an afternoon.
- Bottom seal. Closes the undercut, which is usually the largest single gap in the room.
- EPDM perimeter tape. Along head and both jambs, in the frame rebate.
- Check with a torch. At night, have someone shine a light around the closed door from the other side. Wherever light comes through, so does sound.
04 /Then add mass, one wall at a time
Identify which wall the noise is coming through and treat that one. Full four-wall isolation is the correct specification for a serious studio, but if the budget is not there yet, a single treated wall plus a sealed door is a real improvement rather than a compromise that achieves nothing.

Once the room is quiet enough to record in, treat the reflections. Foam at first reflection points, bass traps in the corners, and something diffusive behind you. Start at 30 to 40 per cent wall coverage rather than covering everything, because an overdamped room is unpleasant to work in and gives you mixes that do not translate.
