An auditorium is not a studio and should not be treated like one. The goal is controlled reverberation, not a dead room. Absorb the rear wall and the ceiling above the audience to kill slap echo, diffuse the side walls to keep the room feeling alive, and use acoustic curtains on one wall so the space can be tuned between speech and music.

Auditoriums are asked to do contradictory things. Speech needs a short reverberation time for intelligibility. Music needs a longer one for warmth and body. A hall used for both has to sit between them, or be adjustable. Most auditorium problems come from treating the room as if it only ever hosts one of the two.

01 /Reverberation is the whole design

Reverberation time is how long sound takes to decay once the source stops. Too short and a hall feels lifeless, speakers sound weak and music loses body. Too long and consonants smear into each other until nobody can follow a sentence from row twenty.

A speech-led auditorium wants roughly 0.8 to 1.2 seconds. A music-led hall wants 1.4 to 2.0. A multipurpose hall has to compromise, which is exactly why adjustable absorption matters more here than in any other building type.

The mistake worth avoiding: absorbing the ceiling above the stage. That surface should reflect, because it projects the performer's sound out into the hall. Absorb it and you lose the natural reinforcement that lets an unamplified speaker be heard at the back.

03 /Adjustable acoustics

The most useful single decision in a multipurpose hall is one wall of acoustic curtains. Drawn, they shorten reverberation for lectures, assemblies and conferences. Opened, they let the hall breathe for music and performance. It is far cheaper than trying to satisfy both with fixed treatment, and it means the room genuinely works for both uses.

04 /Isolation and geometry

  • Seal the envelope. Doors from lobbies and corridors need seals, and ideally a sound lock. Latecomers arriving mid-performance are an acoustic problem as much as a social one.
  • Treat plant noise. Air handling is often the loudest continuous source in a hall and sets the background level everything else has to rise above.
  • Avoid parallel hard surfaces. Flutter echo lives between opposing bare walls. Diffusion, splayed geometry or absorption on one of the pair breaks it.
  • Watch concave surfaces. Curved rear walls and domes focus sound into hot spots. These usually need absorption regardless of the overall reverberation target.

05 /Measure before and after

Take a reverberation measurement in the empty hall before specifying anything, and again once it is treated. An audience is itself a large absorber, so a hall that measures well when empty will be shorter when full. Designing to a number rather than an opinion is what separates a hall that works from one that gets retreated two years later.
