The quick answer
A gap is not a weak point in a barrier, it is an absence of one. Sound passes through an air gap almost unimpeded, so an unsealed door undoes the wall around it. Sealing is the cheapest intervention in soundproofing and the one most often skipped. It cuts heat transfer at the same time.
Most people treating a room start with panels. The order should be the opposite. Before adding mass anywhere, close the openings, because sound follows the path of least resistance and an open gap offers almost none. A door with a 10mm undercut has, acoustically, a permanent open window in it.

03 /Choosing the right material
- EPDM rubber. Holds its compression over years of opening and closing, resists weather and does not harden. This is what we supply and what we would specify.
- Adhesive foam strip. Cheap and quick, but compresses permanently and needs replacing. Reasonable as a temporary test of whether sealing helps.
- Brush seals. Good against draughts, weaker against sound, because bristles do not form an airtight seal. Better on sliding doors where nothing else fits.
04 /Where sealing fits in a full build
In a complete door treatment, sealing comes first, then mass. The full sequence is a bottom seal and EPDM perimeter tape, then MLV and BassBloc bonded to the door leaf, then a finish panel. In a room that is otherwise untreated, seals alone still deliver a noticeable improvement, which is why they are the sensible place to start.
