The quick answer

Acoustic foam is very effective at what it is for, which is absorbing reflections inside a room. It is not soundproofing. Foam will not stop your neighbour hearing you, and no quantity of it on a wall will. It reduces echo and reverberation, improving how a room sounds to the people in it.

Acoustic foam is the most misunderstood product in this category. It is bought constantly by people whose actual problem is noise transmission, and it disappoints all of them. Used for the job it was designed for, it is excellent and inexpensive. Used as a barrier, it does essentially nothing.

0.60NRC, Pyramid 1 inch
0.90NRC, 2 inch profiles
30–40%wall coverage to start
0 dBblocked through a wall

01 /What foam actually does

Acoustic foam has an open-cell structure. Sound waves enter the pores, and friction converts a portion of that acoustic energy into a tiny amount of heat. What returns to the room is quieter than what arrived. Repeat that across enough surface area and the room stops ringing.

That is absorption. It changes the sound of the room you are standing in. It does not add mass, and mass is the only thing that stops sound passing through a partition.

"If your complaint is about a neighbour, foam is the wrong product. If your complaint is about your own room, it is exactly the right one."The distinction worth getting right before you buy

02 /Absorb or block

Your problem What you need Will foam fix it?
Room echoes, recordings sound hollow Absorption on reflective surfaces Yes, this is the job
Poor speech clarity on calls Absorption at first reflection points Yes
Neighbour's television through the wall Mass, meaning MLV No
Footsteps from upstairs Damping and decoupling No
Your music disturbing the house MLV, BassBloc, sealed door No

03 /Profiles and what they are for

Profile shape affects how sound meets the surface and how the panel looks. Thickness affects how far down the frequency range it works.

  • Pyramid 1 inch, NRC 0.60. The budget entry point. Fine for speech-range echo in small rooms and podcast corners.
  • Pyramid 2 inch, NRC 0.90. The sensible default for studios and music rooms, where the extra depth matters.
  • Turbo, Alien, Galaxy, Boxer, Curve and Egg Tray, NRC 0.90. Different surface geometries at the same absorption class, chosen largely on appearance and how they scatter.
How much to install: start at 30 to 40 per cent of wall area, concentrated at first reflection points rather than spread evenly. Covering every surface is a common and expensive mistake that leaves a room sounding dead and unpleasant to work in.

04 /Where foam earns its place

Recording studios, home theatres, podcast rooms, jamming spaces, conference rooms, classrooms, restaurants and auditoriums. Anywhere the complaint is about clarity rather than privacy.

In a full soundproofing build, foam is the finish layer over MLV and BassBloc. In an acoustics-only project, it goes straight on the wall. Both are correct. What is not correct is expecting the second to achieve the first.

05 /Frequently asked questions

Does acoustic foam actually soundproof a room?

No. Acoustic foam absorbs reflections inside a room, reducing echo and reverberation. It has almost no mass, so it does not stop sound passing through walls, floors or doors. Blocking noise requires mass, which means MLV with a dense absorber and a finish layer.

What NRC do the foam profiles have?

Pyramid at 1 inch is NRC 0.60. The 2 inch profiles, including Pyramid 2 inch, Turbo, Alien, Galaxy, Boxer, Curve and Egg Tray, are NRC 0.90. Thickness matters more than profile shape for how far down the frequency range a panel works.

How much of the wall should I cover?

Between 30 and 40 per cent is a sensible starting point, placed at first reflection points rather than spread evenly. Covering everything overdamps the room, which makes it uncomfortable and is a waste of money.

Will foam stop my neighbours hearing me?

No. That is a transmission problem and needs mass on the shared wall. Foam on your side will make your room sound better while changing almost nothing about what passes through. Start with MLV instead.
