The quick answer
Noise from upstairs is impact noise. It enters the building structure at the point of contact and radiates out of your ceiling, so treating your walls does nothing. Build all three layers on the ceiling: MLV to add mass, BassBloc to damp it, then a finish. Decouple with resilient channels if head height allows, because that is the only thing that fully addresses footsteps.
Footsteps, chairs dragging, a dropped object. All of it lands on the slab above and travels through the structure rather than through the air. That distinction decides everything, because mass alone slows airborne sound but does very little against something already vibrating the building.

02 /The ceiling build
- Seal the penetrations. Light fittings, fan boxes, service holes and the wall-to-ceiling junction. An open gap will undo the layers you fit beneath it.
- Decouple if you can. Resilient channels or isolation clips break the mechanical connection between the structure and your new ceiling. Of everything on this page, this is the step that genuinely addresses footsteps.
- Add the barrier. SoundBlanket MLV across the full ceiling, 4mm at STC 34 where the noise is severe. Overlap and seal the seams.
- Add the absorber. BassBloc at 20mm or 40mm, NRC 0.90 under ASTM C423, over the MLV to damp resonance and stop the cavity ringing.
- Finish. Gypsum, HDHMR or acoustic panels covering both technical layers, which are never left exposed.
03 /The cheapest fix is upstairs
Impact noise starts in your neighbour's floor. A rug with a good underlay in the room above will do more for footstep noise than a full ceiling build in yours, because it treats the energy before it enters the structure at all. It is not always possible, but it is always worth asking, and worth offering to pay for. The cost of a good rug is a fraction of a ceiling.
04 /Why it is worth dealing with
- Sleep. Footsteps overhead are intermittent and unpredictable, which is precisely the kind of noise that wakes people and makes it hard to settle again.
- Concentration. If you work from home, an irregular thud is more disruptive than steady background noise, because your attention keeps resetting to it.
- Living with neighbours. Treating your own ceiling avoids the conversation entirely, which is often worth more than the acoustic result itself.
