Behaves Inside the Room
Acoustic treatment does not stop sound escaping. It decides whether your band can actually hear each other. Get this wrong and everyone keeps turning up until the room is a wall of mud.
Target RT60 of 0.4 to 0.6 seconds. Reverberation time is the single number that decides whether a jamming room works. Below 0.3s the room sounds dead and unnatural to play in. Above 0.8s instruments smear into each other and everyone turns up. A treated practice room should land in the 0.4–0.6s range at mid frequencies.
Treat 20 to 40 percent of wall surface, not more. Acoustic guidance for rehearsal spaces recommends treating roughly a fifth to two fifths of wall area and leaving the rest reflective. Over-absorbing kills the natural energy musicians need to feel the room. Use Pyramid or Galaxy Acoustic Foam at NRC 0.90 to hit this efficiently.
Find first reflection points with the mirror test. These are the wall and ceiling spots that bounce sound directly into the players’ ears. Have someone slide a mirror along the wall while you stand at your playing position. Wherever you see another band member or an amp, that is a first reflection point. Treat those before anything else.
Panel height matters: treat at ear and amp level. Guitar and bass cabinets project at roughly 0.5 to 1.2 metres and vocals at standing head height. Mount absorption across that band rather than up near the ceiling, where reflections carry far less of the energy that muddies your sound.
Bass traps in all four corners, floor to at least mid height. Low frequencies from kick drum and bass guitar collect in room corners and create standing waves. Every serious source on rehearsal acoustics puts corner bass trapping first. Foam Bass Traps in all four corners is the minimum; floor-to-ceiling is better in small rooms.
Treat behind the drum kit and beside the amps. Cymbals and snare throw sharp reflections off the wall and ceiling directly behind the kit. Guitar cabs do the same off nearby side walls. These two zones cause more perceived harshness than any other surface in a typical jamming room.
Add diffusion so the room does not go dead. Absorption alone flattens the room. Wooden Diffusers on the rear wall scatter energy evenly instead of removing it, which prevents flutter echo between parallel walls while keeping the room feeling alive and playable.
Cover the floor. A bare concrete or tile floor is one large untreated reflective surface directly under the loudest sources in the room. Acoustic Carpet Tiles across the full floor cut floor bounce and also reduce impact noise travelling into the structure below.

Soundproofing uses mass and absorption to contain drums, amps and bass inside the room. For a jamming room it requires 100% coverage on all four walls to be effective.
Layer 1: SoundBlanket MLV 4mm. Mass Loaded Vinyl is the primary noise barrier. At 4mm it handles sounds up to 120dB. Must cover 100% of all 4 walls with no gaps or overlaps. Any gap in the barrier reduces isolation dramatically.
Layer 2: BassBloc 40mm. Sits on top of the MLV. Absorbs low-frequency bass vibrations the MLV alone cannot block. NRC 0.85. Must also cover 100% of the wall. This is what stops bass and kick drum from bleeding to adjacent rooms.
Layer 3: Acoustic Finish Panel. Covers the BassBloc completely. Protects the layers, controls internal echo and gives the wall its final appearance. Must cover 100%. Any exposed MLV or BassBloc is both visually unfinished and acoustically incomplete.
Seal doors and windows. The weakest point in any studio is always the door gap and window. Use Bottom Door Seal + EPDM perimeter tape and a Soundproof Curtain 4500 GSM on all windows.
