Most arguments about festival noise happen without anybody knowing the rules. They are short, specific, and worth reading once.
The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 say this about loudspeakers:
- No use at night. A loudspeaker, public address system, sound amplifier or sound producing instrument may not be used between 10 pm and 6 am.
- Closed premises are the exception. Auditoria, conference rooms, community halls and banquet halls are outside that restriction, as is a genuine public emergency.
- The festive relaxation is limited and finite. A state government may permit use between 10 pm and midnight on cultural or religious occasions, for a maximum of fifteen days in all during a calendar year. Not fifteen days per festival. Fifteen days in the year.

Three reasons the same evening is harder on a small child than on you:
- They are closer to the source. Children are usually nearer the ground, nearer the crackers, and often carried at the front of a crowd rather than at the back of it.

If you have an infant, an elderly parent, someone studying for exams or anyone who simply needs to sleep, do not try to treat the whole home. Pick one room and improve it for the season:
- Choose the room furthest from the road and, if possible, one that does not share a wall with the street facing side.
- Close and seal the windows. A perimeter gasket and a firm latch do more than the glass thickness does, because gaps carry sound far better than glazing blocks it.

If you organise a pandal, a society function or a concert, the WHO global standard for safe listening venues and events sets out what good practice looks like. Its headline figure is 100 dB LAeq averaged over 15 minutes as a maximum, alongside live monitoring by a named person with calibrated equipment, hearing protection available to anyone who asks, and quiet zones sized for at least 10 per cent of the audience.
None of that dampens an event. A monitored system, a speaker stack aimed at the crowd rather than the neighbours, and a quiet corner for the grandparents will get you fewer complaints, fewer police visits and a longer licence life than turning it up will.
