Windows are the weakest acoustic element in almost every urban home. Seal the air gaps first, because an unsealed frame undoes everything else. Then add mass across the opening, either with acoustic glazing if you are renovating, or with a soundproof curtain if you are not. Ordinary blackout curtains block light, not sound.

- Air gaps around the frame. Sliding windows, worn beading and unsealed frames leave direct air paths. A gap you can see daylight through is a gap sound travels through freely.
- Resonance between matched panes. Two panes of identical thickness resonate together and let certain frequencies straight through, which is why glazing specifications deliberately use unequal thicknesses.

04 /Measuring and fitting
- Measure the frame in inches. Check you have at least 4 inches of clearance above the window for the fixing and roll mechanism.
- Add 2 inches on all four sides. That overlap is what lets the double-sided Velcro close the air gaps. Without it you are back to leaking at the edges.
- Choose your fixing. Adhesive hooks or screws, onto metal or wooden frames. Tenants usually prefer adhesive.
- Seal the frame itself. Fit perimeter seal tape in the frame rebate before hanging anything. This is the step most people skip.

Do soundproof curtains actually block noise?

How is this different from a blackout curtain?
