The quick answer
Choosing an OEM acoustic supplier is mostly a documentation exercise, not a price negotiation. Ask for the test report, the density specification, the fire classification and three samples from three different production batches before you discuss cost. A trader will stall on all four. A manufacturer will send them the same week.
01 /What OEM really means in acoustics
OEM in this industry covers three very different arrangements, and a lot of disappointment comes from buyers and suppliers using the word to mean different things.
- Private label. You buy an existing product, made to its existing specification, in your packaging with your brand on it. Fastest to start, least control over what is inside.
- Modified standard. An existing product changed in one or two dimensions: a different thickness, a different facing fabric, a different sheet size. Moderate lead time, moderate control.
- True contract manufacture. The product is engineered to your specification, with your tolerances and your test targets. Longest lead time, highest control, and the only version where the performance number is genuinely yours to defend.
Decide which of the three you are buying before you send a single enquiry. Half of all OEM disputes trace back to a buyer who thought they were commissioning the third and was quoted for the first.
02 /Five documents to ask an OEM acoustic supplier for
Ask for these before you talk about price. What comes back, and how quickly, tells you almost everything.
- The absorption test report. For any absorber, this means a sound absorption test to ASTM C423 or ISO 354, run in a reverberation chamber. It should name the laboratory, the date, the sample thickness and the mounting type.
- The transmission test report. For any barrier or membrane, this means ASTM E90 with the rating calculated to ASTM E413, or the ISO equivalent. A barrier sold without one is being sold on faith.
- The fire classification. Which standard, which class, which laboratory, which date. ASTM E84 for North America, Euroclass to EN 13501 for Europe, IS 12777 or the relevant Indian standard for domestic projects.
- The material specification sheet. Density in kg per cubic metre, thickness tolerance, dimensional tolerance, and the raw material description. Density is the number that quietly decides everything else.
- The quality plan. What is checked, how often, by whom, and what happens to a batch that fails.
There is one honest exception. A genuinely new product may not yet have a full test report, and a good supplier will say so plainly and show you the test booking instead. What should worry you is a confident performance number with nothing behind it.

Once the documents are in hand, the material questions get specific:
- What is the density, and what is the tolerance on it? A supplier who quotes a density without a tolerance has not thought about consistency. Two batches at the extremes of a loose tolerance will not sound the same.
- Which profile was tested? Absorption data for a flat sheet does not transfer to a pyramid or wedge profile cut from the same stock, and the other way round.
- Is the raw material virgin or recycled, and does that change between batches? Recycled content is a good thing when it is controlled and declared. It is a problem when it silently varies.
- What is the sheet size and the yield? A cheaper sheet that cuts badly for your standard panel is not cheaper.
- How does it behave in humidity? Relevant everywhere in India, and decisive for pool halls, basements and coastal projects.
- What happens at the edges? Edge treatment, fraying and delamination are where cheap panels reveal themselves after six months.

Numbers in that form, tied to a named test, are what you should expect from any serious OEM acoustic supplier, ours or anyone else's.
04 /Questions about the factory
This is the part most buyers skip, and it is the part that determines whether batch fifty looks like batch one.
- Do you own the production line, or do you buy in and convert? Both are legitimate. Only one gives you control over the base material.
- What is the monthly capacity for this specific product? Not total factory capacity. The line that makes your item.
- What is your batch size, and how are batches traced? If a complaint arrives in month eight, can they tell you which batch it came from?
- Who does incoming raw material inspection? Ask to see one filled-in inspection record, not the blank template.
- What is your reject rate, and where do rejects go? A supplier who claims a zero reject rate is either not measuring or not telling you.
- Can I visit, or send a third party inspector? The answer matters more than the visit. A refusal is its own answer.
05 /Questions about the commercial side
Price is the last conversation, not the first. When you get there, these are the terms that decide whether the price holds:
- What drives the price, and what is fixed? Raw material cost, freight and currency move. Tooling and setup usually do not. Ask which parts of the quote are exposed.
- What is the tooling or setup cost, and who owns the tool? If you pay for it, get that in writing.
- What is the minimum order quantity, and does it fall after the first order? Many suppliers hold a high first MOQ and a much lower repeat MOQ.
- What is the realistic lead time in your busy season? Ask for the busy season number, not the quiet season number.
- Who carries the cost of a failed batch? Settle this before it happens, because it eventually happens.
- What are the packaging and labelling rules? For export, this includes marking, pallet specification and documentation, and getting it wrong stops a container.

India has become a serious sourcing base for acoustic materials, which is good news for buyers and also means the market now contains a lot of intermediaries presenting themselves as factories. None of the questions above are hostile. A manufacturer who is proud of the line will enjoy answering them, and the ones who go quiet have told you what you needed to know.

How do I tell a manufacturer from a trader?
Ask three questions: what is the density tolerance, which laboratory ran the test report, and can you send samples from three different production dates. A manufacturer answers all three from memory or within a few days. A trader has to go and ask someone else, and the delay is the tell. There is nothing wrong with buying through a trader, but you should know that is what you are doing.
What test reports should an OEM acoustic supplier provide?
For absorbers, a sound absorption test to ASTM C423 or ISO 354 with the mounting type stated. For barriers and membranes, a transmission loss test to ASTM E90 rated under ASTM E413, or the ISO equivalent. Plus a fire classification appropriate to your market. Each report should name the laboratory, the date and the exact sample tested.
Is a low minimum order quantity a good sign?
Not on its own. A very low MOQ on a supposedly custom product often means you are being offered stock with your label on it, which is fine if that is what you wanted. For true contract manufacture a higher first order with a lower repeat order is the normal and honest structure, because the setup cost has to land somewhere.
Should I insist on visiting the factory?
You do not always need to go, but you should always ask. A supplier who offers dates, or who welcomes a third party inspection agency, is telling you the line exists and looks the way they described it. A supplier who deflects the question has answered it. For a first large order, a third party inspection costs very little against the value of the container.
