- The treads are stone. Kota, granite, marble and vitrified tile are dense, rigid and bonded straight to the RCC structure. A heel strike goes into the concrete with almost nothing to slow it down.
- The stair is structural. It is not a floor sitting on a floor. It is part of the frame, so vibration spreads into the walls and slabs it is cast into.
- The void connects everything. An open stairwell is a shaft running from the ground floor to the top. Airborne sound travels up it freely, which is why you can hear the kitchen from the terrace bedroom.

If the house is still under construction or the staircase is being redone, this is your one chance to do it properly.
- Bed the tread on a resilient layer. A rubber or cork isolation strip between the stone and the structure breaks the direct path. Done at construction it costs very little. Done afterwards it means lifting the stone.
- Isolate the nosing. The front edge takes the heel strike and is where most of the energy enters. A resilient nosing detail earns its place.
- Do not grout the tread hard against the stringer wall. A rigid connection at the side is a bridge. A flexible sealant there is better than mortar.
- Keep the landing separate. Landings are usually the largest single slab in the stair and the loudest. Treat them like a small floor, with an underlay.
If the staircase is finished and you are not lifting stone, be realistic. Nothing applied to the underside of a stair meaningfully reduces footfall, because the energy is already inside the concrete. What you can still do is soften the strike at the top, which is the next section.
04 /The runner: unglamorous and genuinely effective

A runner reduces the impact at the moment it is created, which is the only place left to intervene once the stair is built. It works, but the details decide how well:
- Use an underlay, always. A runner laid straight onto stone is a decorative object. The felt or rubber underlay underneath it is what actually does the work.
- Cover 60 to 80% of the tread width. Wide enough that people walk on it rather than beside it. A narrow strip down the middle looks smart and gets stepped around.
- Wrap the nosing. The runner must go over the front edge, not stop short of it. The nosing is where the heel lands.
- Fix it properly. Stair rods or a stair grip system. A loose runner on a stone stair is a genuine fall risk, particularly for older family members.
- Choose weight over pattern. A heavier wool or a dense synthetic pile does more than a thin flatweave, whatever the showroom says.
05 /The void, the railing and the door nobody fits
Once footfall is handled, the remaining noise is airborne, and it lives in the void.
- Put absorption on the stairwell walls. This is the surface everyone leaves bare because it is awkward to reach. PET felt panels, fabric wrapped panels or acoustic paintings on the tall wall above the flight will shorten the ring noticeably. Acoustic art is an easy sell in a stairwell because the wall was going to be decorated anyway.
- Treat the underside of the flight above. The soffit of the upper flight is a large hard surface angled straight down at you. It is one of the most effective and least used panel locations in the house.
- Fit a door at the head or foot of the stair. This is the single biggest airborne improvement available in most duplexes, and almost nobody does it. A door with a proper perimeter seal and a drop seal at the bottom cuts the vertical path between floors. In a house where the stair opens directly into a bedroom corridor, this changes the night entirely.
- Check the railing. Loose balusters, a hollow metal handrail and unpacked fixings buzz and ring. Tighten everything, and pack hollow sections where you can reach them.

Does carpet on the stairs really reduce footstep noise?
Yes, and it is the most reliable retrofit available for staircase noise reduction, provided it is laid over a felt or rubber underlay and wrapped over the nosing. The underlay does most of the work. A runner laid straight onto stone with no underlay is decoration, not a fix.
Can I soundproof a staircase after the stone is already laid?
Partly. The complete fix is a resilient layer under the treads, and that means lifting the stone. Without lifting it you can still soften the strike with a runner and underlay, cut the airborne path with a door at the head or foot of the stair, and shorten the ring with panels on the stairwell walls. Together those cover most of what people actually complain about.
Why does my duplex staircase echo so much?
Because a stairwell is a tall, narrow, hard walled volume with no soft surface in it. Plaster, stone, glass and metal all reflect nearly everything that hits them, and the height gives the sound room to bounce. Absorption on the tall wall and on the soffit of the flight above is what shortens it.
