The quick answer
Identify the noise first. Voices and television are airborne and need mass on the wall. Footsteps are impact noise and travel through structure. Gaps around doors and sockets are flanking paths and need sealing. For a shared bedroom wall, the answer is almost always a three-layer build: MLV to block, BassBloc to absorb, and a finish panel over the top. It goes on the existing wall with adhesive, no demolition.
A bedroom is the one room where noise costs you something measurable. Broken sleep affects concentration, mood and health, and a shared wall in an apartment is the shortest path between your neighbour's living room and your pillow. The good news is that a single wall can be treated properly without touching the rest of the room.
01 /Work out which noise you have
Different noise travels differently, and the wrong fix does nothing. Before buying anything, identify what you are actually hearing.

02 /The three-layer wall
- Block. SoundBlanket 4mm MLV, rated STC 34, goes on first. It is dense and limp, which is exactly what stops airborne sound, and only 4mm thick so the room barely shrinks.
- Absorb. BassBloc 20mm, NRC 0.90 under ASTM C423, sits over the MLV to damp vibration and stop the wall resonating.
- Finish. Felt acoustic panels, wooden slats, plywood, gypsum or pre-laminated HDHMR. This layer is not optional. MLV and BassBloc must always be covered.

03 /One wall, no renovation
You do not need to break the wall or treat the whole room. The layers are surface applied with SR Adhesive directly onto the existing plaster, then covered with stick-on felt panels or a slat wall. The install is dry, reversible and upgradable, which matters if you are renting.
Treat the wall the noise is coming through. Treating all four walls in a bedroom is usually wasted money unless you have neighbours on more than one side.
04 /The gaps that undo the work
- Windows. A soundproof curtain at STC 29 reduces up to 80 per cent of outside noise, and handles traffic and street noise that a wall treatment never touches.
- Doors. Perimeter seals and a bottom seal close the air path. A door gap will out-leak an entire treated wall.
- Sockets and switch boxes. Back-to-back electrical boxes in a shared wall are a direct hole through it. Offset them or seal behind the plate.
05 /If you are building rather than retrofitting
- Rockwool or glasswool. Useful inside a cavity wall behind gypsum board, where there is a void to fill. Not a surface treatment, and no substitute for a barrier layer.
- Resilient channels. Used to decouple a new stud layer from the structure, which is the only real answer to impact noise. Requires building out from the existing wall.

How do I block my neighbour's TV and conversations?
That is airborne noise, so it needs mass on the shared wall. Use SoundBlanket 4mm MLV at STC 34 as the blocking layer, BassBloc 20mm over it to damp vibration, then a finish panel. All three layers matter, and the finish is not decorative only, it completes the build.
Can I soundproof one wall without renovating?

Are acoustic foams enough on their own?
No. Foam absorbs echo inside your own room and improves how it sounds, but it has almost no mass, so it does not block sound arriving through a wall. Use foam after a blocking layer is in place, not instead of one.
Will this block every sound completely?
No, and be wary of anyone promising it. Total isolation needs a fully decoupled room built from the structure outwards. A three-layer wall treatment substantially reduces everyday household noise, particularly speech and television, and that is what most bedrooms need.
Is it removable later?
Yes. The layers are surface mounted and can be removed or upgraded. Adhesive-fixed layers will mark the plaster behind them, so if the property is rented, plan on making good when you leave.
Are the materials safe for a bedroom?
The felt finish panels are Class A fire rated under ASTM E84, VOC free, odourless and non-toxic, which matters in a room you sleep in for eight hours a night. Ask for the fire rating on any material going into a bedroom.
