Four steps, in this order: seal the frame perimeter, fit a bottom seal, add mass to the leaf, then hang a curtain if you need more. The first two are DIY and cost very little. Skipping them and going straight to step three is why most door projects underdeliver.
A door is the weakest acoustic element in almost any room, and also the easiest to improve. It is thinner than the wall around it, usually hollow, and fitted with a deliberate gap at the bottom. Fix those in order and you get a noticeable result in an afternoon.
01 /Seal the perimeter
Start with the gap between the door and its frame. EPDM seal tape in the frame rebate closes it along the head and both jambs. Where the frame meets the masonry, use acoustic sealant rather than ordinary filler, which shrinks and cracks and reopens the path within a year.
02 /Fit a bottom seal
The undercut beneath a door is usually the single largest gap in the room, often bigger than the head and both jambs combined. A bottom seal with an aluminium body and vinyl or brush contact strip closes it while still letting the door swing freely. It also keeps out dust, draughts and insects, which is why it earns its place even in rooms with no noise problem.
03 /Add mass to the leaf
With the gaps closed, the door itself becomes the limit. A hollow-core leaf has very little mass, and mass is what blocks airborne sound.
- Bond SoundBlanket MLV to the face. 2.5mm at STC 30 for bedrooms and offices, 4mm at STC 34 for studios and theatres.
- Add BassBloc over it. Damps the leaf so it does not resonate now that it is heavier.
- Finish with a panel. Felt, slats or thin board. The technical layers are never left exposed.
04 /Hang a curtain if you need more
A soundproof curtain over the doorway adds mass across the whole opening, including the frame. Ours is rated STC 29 and reduces up to 80 per cent of outside noise. It works because of the mass loaded vinyl core inside it, not because the fabric is heavy, so ignore listings that describe only thickness or fabric weight. Suits rented homes and open doorways with no door at all.
05 /What a door treatment will not do
It will not reduce echo inside your room. Echo is a reflection problem and needs absorption on the walls and ceiling, not mass on the door. It also will not stop footsteps from the floor above, which travel through structure rather than through the doorway. Treating a door fixes transmission through that opening, and nothing else.
